Centre member Gabriele Aroni has a new article out in The Conversation: “When players become artists: the rise of in‑game photography”
Video games visual quality has greatly advanced over recent decades. Players now explore detailed worlds, admire their beauty, and record their adventures through images. As more players shared their images online, developed embraced this trend, with many games featuring a “photo mode” allowing players to pause the action, frame shots and take pictures. Artists and photographers have also started to use virtual environments as spaces for creative exploration, giving rise to a new art form at the intersection of video games, photography and contemporary art: in-game photography. This article outlines the current in-game photography scene, explore the techniques used by artists - from traditional photography to the creative use of glitches and game mechanics - while considering how these images challenge traditional ideas of authorship and what it means to photograph entirely virtual worlds.
