Ripped, Recycled and Modded: Sustainable Game (Re)Creation is a seminar featuring MMGC member Dr Rob Gallagher and Dr Stefan Werning of the Utrecht Centre for Game Research.

Rob Gallagher will explore David Kanaga's Oikospiel, analysing its use of second-hand assets, including character models scavenged from AAA games, discussing issues of copyright, the labour of game development and the depletion of non-renewable energy sources.

Rob is a Lecturer in Film and Media at Manchester Metropolitan University. His current research explores the recontextualisation of assets and mechanics from AAA videogames in works by indie and avant-garde developers. Rob has published in journals such as Game Studies and Games and Culture, and has written for The Guardian, The New Inquiry and The Architectural Review. He is the author of Videogames, Identity and Digital Subjectivity (Routledge, 2017).

Stefan Werning will discuss his research project that explores modding through with students to foster ecocritical discussion and environmental storytelling.

Stefan is an Associate Professor for Digital Media and Game Studies at Utrecht University, where he organizes the annual ‘Multidisciplinary Game Research’ summer school and coordinates the special interest group ‘Thinking Through Games’ within the Game Research focus area. He obtained a PhD (2010) in media studies from Bonn University and his venia legendi at Bayreuth University (2015). Stefan has been a visiting scholar (2005) and fellow (2006-2010) at the program in Comparative Media Studies at MIT. Moreover, he has worked in the digital games industry, most notably at Codemasters (2005) and Nintendo of Europe (2007-09).
