Call for Papers: Exploratory Green Gaming Seminar

The Green Gaming seminar is a cooperative adventure developed in collaboration with the Game Studies Research Centre (Poland), the Manchester Game Centre (UK), Cologne Game Lab (Germany) and the Centre for Excellence in Game Studies (Finland). The event will take place over a month, and explore ideas at the crossroads of game studies, environmental sciences, and ecomedia research.

Call for Papers

As we progress through the age of the Anthropocene, the field of environmental research and criticism is ever-growing. This trend reflects numerous concerns of scholars across all disciplines, including game studies, for the planet and generations to come. There has been an increasing number of papers, conferences, and other initiatives dedicated to various topics related to ecogames (Raessens et al. 2024), or more broadly – ecomedia (Rust et al. 2016); their aesthetics, themes, politics, and more. We believe there is still much more to be explored within the field of green gaming which is why we invite researchers to join us in the collaborative exploration of the green gaming scholarship.

Our goal is to create a forum for researchers to “talk-shop” ideas, share insights, and come together in a collective effort to produce new knowledge in the field of green gaming. During four weekly online meetings, the participants will have the opportunity to discuss proposed ideas for articles, drafts, or pre-prints on which they would like to receive feedback. Working in a group setting will allow us to identify common threads in our research and support each scholar in their exploration of their selected topics. The intended outcome of the seminar is for each participant to have made progress on their proposed idea, with a plan on how to develop it further, as a result of the collaborative work of all the participating scholars during our weekly meetings. After the seminar we will consider a joint publication of the results in a special issue of one of the game studies journals, or a joint book proposal.

Seminar format

Exploratory on-line seminar opened to all interested parties.

Participants prepare 10–15-minute talks, send their drafts / presentations to organizers, who distribute them to others a month prior to the event; we all are invited to comment, give feedback, and offer further reading suggestions, questions.

During the seminar, for four 2 hour rounds (1 round a week) we discuss the papers / presentations. This allows us to work collaboratively on ~ 12 papers for a prolonged seminar.
