“On the Pre-Perception of Gamification and Game-Based Learning in Higher Education Students: A Systematic Mapping Study” Simulation and Gaming
In this paper, MGC member John Henry, Dr Fujia (Cliff) Li, (University of Exeter) and Sylvester Arnab (Coventry University) look at what effect existing bias or perception can have on the effectiveness of gamification and games-based approaches in higher education. In their mapping, they find that no research considers prior perception and experiences of gamification as part of their data collection process, and even more so, limited research examines perception post experience, when reporting on the effectiveness of their approaches. Going forward, they suggest how researchers in the area may begin looking into how existing bias and may effect the effectiveness of gamification and games-based approaches. This, they argue, can be achieved through co-design or through questionnaires during the design phase.
