RISE

Rise at Man Met is an innovative space in which all students can participate in a range of cross-curricular experiences to enhance their future development. It covers a huge variety of experiences, from one-off workshops to long-term internships, in areas as diverse as design thinking, genealogy, arts methodologies and programming.

As part of Rise, we offer a number of games-related activities which are specifically designed to broaden the experiences of students who do not study games elsewhere. MGSN member Matteo Menapace has created a 10-hour DIY Games intensive that can be completed at any time, and has also mentors students from across the university on Rise games design projects. In addition, we list MGSN events on the Rise site so that students can gain Rise points for taking part.

Games also feed into the design of Rise itself; we are increasingly interested in using the principles of games design to inform students freeform journeys through the programme, and to add nuance to the Rise points system through which students gain recognition and credit.

The Rise scheme was named the winner of the Guardian’s Course Design, Retention and Student Outcomes award for 2020.
