Location: Bristol Digital Game Lab
Monday 27th – Wednesday 29th April 2026
At the Festival of History and Heritage in Games, MGC member Jenny Cromwell will present a paper on “Game design as a creative pedagogic and research method in ancient history”. The event brings researchers, game designers, heritage professionals, and players together to think about how games can teach us about the past. Jenny’s talk will discuss game making as a creative process in the teaching and research of historical and heritage-related topics, drawing upon case studies from her current practice, notably teaching on her undergraduate module ‘Gaming and the Humanities’, and the use of analogue and low fidelity (lo-fi) digital game design as part of her research. In particular, she’ll discuss her work on a tabletop role-playing game (TTRPG) on the Egyptian Battle of Qadesh (1274 BCE). Together, these case studies will demonstrate the important roles that games can play in attaining new ways of thinking about – and consequently new understandings of – historical material, events, and issues.
