BLOOD BOWL: A CULTURAL HISTORY – Player Meetup

  • Salutation Pub (upstairs) 12 Higher Chatham Street Manchester, England, M15 6ED United Kingdom (map)

Karl Kopinski - Kick Off

Join us for an informal evening of Blood Bowl at The Salutation pub in Manchester. Come along and play whatever variety of Blood Bowl you’re in the mood for – whether that’s Blood Bowl, Dungeon Bowl, Sevens, Gutter Bowl, Blitz Bowl, or Blood Bowl: Team Manager. We’ll also bring along some Blood Bowl-adjacent games such as Guild Ball, DreadBall and Battle Ball. We’ll also provide pizza and cake, and the bar downstairs will be open for drinks and food.

This is the second of the Blood Bowl meet-ups that we’re running as part of an ongoing series of events in support of Dr Paul Wake’s research project – ‘Blood Bowl- A Cultural History’. With this in mind, all participants will be emailed before the event with more details of the project, and with an invitation to share their thoughts about the game.

Blood Bowl – A Cultural History

This discussions at this event will contribute to a book-length study of Blood Bowl which is scheduled to be published by the University of Michigan Press in their new ‘Tabletop Games’ series.

Identifying Blood Bowl as a significant cultural text, and recognising its various editions as responses to its changing historical contexts, both in the UK and globally, the project traces the game’s history, paying close attention to its development, its player communities, and the creation of its continually-shifting fantasy setting. In addition to, and emerging from, Blood Bowl’s history, the project explores, and contributes new knowledge to, critical debates in game studies about the interplay of theme and mechanics.

This project is funded by Game in Lab.
