Playing Ancient Egypt: Modern Board Games and Reception

In this seminar, centre member Jenny Cromwell (Reader in Ancient History, Manchester Met) together with three undergraduate students (Kira Baxendale, Samuel Jolly, and Aieyan Khan) will discuss different aspects of board games set in ancient Egypt. Topics that will be addressed include board games as a form of reception of ancient Egypt, how game mechanics affect how Egypt is presented, the experience of playing these games, their limitations, and their potential utility in an education setting. Multiple games will be discussed throughout, including Cleopatra and the Society of Architects, Ankh’or, Ankh: Gods of Egypt, and Sailing Towards Osiris.

This is a public lecture, all are welcome to attend either in person or online
