Produced through workshops with men on license, Probationary: The Game of Life on Licence (2017) explores the lived experience of being on probation. Taking the form of a board game, Probationary takes its players on a journey through the eyes of four playable characters as they navigate the complexities of the probation process.
The game was created by socially engaged artist Hwa Young , in collaboration with men on probation, probation officers, and criminologists. Commissioned and produced by FACT, and supported by Liverpool John Moores University, it has been on tour and played at a diverse range of settings and audiences ranging from the British Criminology Conference and London Design Festival to the Tate Exchange and the Ministry of Justice.
In this session Hwa Young will give a presentation of the design process and the impact that the game has had in the criminal justice system and beyond. This will be followed by an opportunity to play the game and discuss the outcomes of the work and research.
