Journal of Play in Adulthood: Playful Learning 2022 Special Issue

Journal of Play in Adulthood, Playful Learning Conference Special Issue

Manchester Game Centre member Dr John Lean introduces the special issue of The Journal of Play in Adulthood that he has recently edited.

I recently guest edited a special issue of the Journal of Play in Adulthood to tie in with last year’s Playful Learning Conference, which draws together six contributions from presenters at the conference. Playful Learning focuses on forms of play in adult learning, including universities, libraries, professional and community settings. These can range from highly digital approaches including simulation and gaming, to more cultural and philosophical play that with ties to approaches used in early years settings.

It's always a thought provoking and engaging conference, with a deliberately playful approach to itself which I’ve written about previously. The six papers in this issue come from a diverse range of contributors, but what they have in common is a critical approach to the ways in which play is manifested in objects when we use it to learn. From podcasts to toys, all the articles examine how these objects contribute to and evidence learning, and how they might be used to create even more powerful (and playful) learning opportunities. Take a look!

This year’s Playful Learning Conference is just about to kick off in Leicester, but if you’re interested in joining the Playful Learning Association for next year’s conference or other networking events, check out our website.
