New MMGC Publication: Ecohorror Tabletop Roleplaying with Series 3 of The Between

With TTRPG designer and academic James Louis Smith, MMGC member Chloe Germaine has written material for the latest season of indie tabletop roleplaying game, The Between. Designed by Jason Cordova, founder of the Gauntlet TTRPG Community and publishing house, The Between is a game in which you play one of a mysterious group of monster hunters investigating threats in Victorian London, threats too weird for Scotland Yard… The game is directly inspired by the television series, Penny Dreadful (2014 - 2016) and a host of Gothic horror novels.

Chloe and James’ threat for series three, The Miasma of Miswell Hill, was chosen for publication in series three of the role-playing game, after being shortlisted in a competition. The threat asks investigators to explore a rookery in the heart of the city, to navigate their way through the precarious class politics, which threatens to bubble up into civil unrest at any moment, and understand the nature of a strange toxic miasma said to be consuming the residents.

The threat aims to explore the intersection of ecological slow violence and class oppression, drawing on the resources of the Victorian Gothic and the Eco Gothic, and to engage players in an intimate yet uncomfortable encounter with a collapsing physical and social environment.

Art for the threat was created by the talented Amanda Franck, whose work for The Between draws on ephemera of the period, such as the Illustrated London News. Her work for The Miasma evokes the merger of the natural and the industrial with the underground rivers of London, and the nascent labour movement in the city.

We recommend checking out the rest of the fascinating material available for The Between role-playing game and to watch this space for more creative projects from MMGC members in the future.
